Selecting asset class components – Real estate

To gain exposure to US real estate, I chose VNQ, the Vanguard REIT (real estate investment trust). VNQ has the following real estate sector breakdown:

Sector %
Diversified 8.5
Industrial 5.4
Office 16.7
Residential 16.6
Retail 25.1
Specialized 27.6

I will leave it to the real estate experts to determine if this is a sensible representation of the US real estate market. However, it does not appear to be unreasonable and it is by far the most liquid real estate ETF.
